Gaming news: PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale (sometimes abbreviated as PSASBR) is a fighting game starring many characters from Sony developed games. PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale will be available on both the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, and feature cross-platform play. If you buy the PlayStation 3 version of the game you will get a digital copy of the PlayStation Vita version for free using CrossBuy.

The gameplay and crossover idea is similar to Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. series and their compatibility between the Wii U version and the 3DS version. Those who are playing the PlayStation 3 version of PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale will be able to compete against those with the PlayStation Vita and vice versa. The game is similar to that in the Super Smash Bros. series in that it features characters exclusive to its publishing company's games as well as similary-looking combat style and levels. However the underlying combat itself is vastly different, with many similarities to Marvel Versus Capcom. Further more it brings a few new ideas to the table, most importantly a completely unique scoring mechanic.
PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale was rumored to have existed for several months under the moniker Title Fight. PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is currently under development at SuperBot Entertainment (with the help of Sony's super-powered group at Santa Monica Studio).

Supers

By building a special meter for each character -- a la Street Fighter or Marvel vs. Capcom -- players can unleash a torrent of special attacks that grow in power the higher the meter gets. For instance, Sly Cooper's standard first level attack might be fairly unimpressive, but his second level attack allows him to bomb enemies from above and can easily kill everyone on the screen. And if you get to a third level attack, watch out: Colonel Radec will get into a body-encompassing machinegun from Killzone 3, while Sweet Tooth turns into a gigantic truck to rain down destruction on his foes. These attacks spell almost certain death for everyone else on-screen. So far in the game modes announced for the game, players can only get killed by super attacks.

To build the super meter, characters collect orbs called Action Points (AP balls). Orbs are received through attacking, certain moves, and the Nanotech Crate item. Orbs can also be knocked from opponents through certain means, like environmental hazards and items.

Development

All Stars is under development by SuperBot Entertainment. It's their first game, but the game is being co-produced by Sony Santa Monica. Deborah Mars (Fat Princess, Escape Plan) is the Sony-side producer.
SuperBot Entertainment is composed of staff that worked on fighting series like UFC Undisputed and Mortal Kombat, there are also said to be ex-staff from both Naughty Dog and Sony Santa Monica. These guys didn't just look at what Nintendo did and outright copy it. Rather, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale represents the definition of iteration, an evolution of the style of game that attempts to take the formula to another level.
